A holding clasp for the plastic handbrake cable has broken, exposing the tube to the prop shaft.

Electrical wiring that is damp or has a filthy connection to the battery. Remember that this is a FIAT, not a FORD, and use an on-board diagnostics (OBDII) scanner to look for trouble codes.

Because changing the diff fluid isn't expensive, I guess you're right that it's probably the culprit.
But it may be a prop bearing, a resonant bush or even tire noise.
