Is the vehicle already equipped with pre-drilled attachment points, and how will they fasten?

The purpose of the running boards on a CX-90 is unclear to me. From where I'm standing, the car seems to be quite low...Could the running boards potentially slam into your shins as you climb in? Is this just for show?
