Over the past decade, I've had the good fortune to own no less than four different models—the W219, 218 (with the facelift), 257 (the most recent), and I must say that each one delighted me.
The return of my wife's cancer has been devastating, and as we age, we've noticed that getting in and out of the car has become ever increasingly difficult.
We went to check out a GLC 300, but I was surprised to see that it was hard to get in and out due to the side steps. The salesperson suggested we try another one that was in the showroom's rear without the steps, and while that was easier to get in and out of, it wasn't much better. Is anyone else who owns a GLC aware of this?
Ultimately, we decided to test drive a 2022 GLA 250 W247. We were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get in and out of the car, as well as the ample power of its 2L petrol engine. Despite not being a CLS, it is a fantastic vehicle overall.

The same problem with the sidesteps was, I think, discovered again.
The simple fact that it simplifies things for me is a huge plus. So that Mrs. Ant could breathe a little easier, we upgraded from a (quite inferior to your CLS) C Class to a GLC. I know what you mean about the side steps; I thought they added character but ended up getting in the way, so I swapped them out for regular skirts.
The GLA is a fantastic compact vehicle, and it really shines with the petrol engine and the updated cabin.

My favourite Mercedes, out of the many that I've had, was the CLS. The lower and stiffer shell transformed it into a true sporting saloon upon request, a significant departure from its E class foundation. In my view, the pinnacle of Mercedes.

The present BMW i3's ease of access and egress was not one of my considerations when I purchased it. Sitting on a battery forces the seat to be at a height that allows you to reach into the automobile without getting out of your seat. Something that, in the years that followed, I came to quietly admire.
