There will be a cost, but I believe you'll have to take your automobile out of their possession (if they have it) and have an outside party handle it. They intend to use the mileage as evidence. At that age, cars may and often do break down.

To avoid ever having to manually use the parking brake, I just turn on Auto Hold and let the car do it. I really like the car's Auto Hold feature.
